Mind Gym By Gary Mack
Gary Mack is a sport psychology consultant and uses techniques and exercises to help elite athletes build mental muscle and reveals his knowledge through out Mind Gym. Mind Gym is a book about how athletes have been successful through out their careers by preparing themselves mentally helping them overcome their obstacles. With the same methods that Gary Mack uses in Mind Gym, students, like myself, can overcome obstacles that can intervene in your life causing you to stop or just delay you from reaching your goals, therefor using this method students can succeed in their studies just how athletes succeeded through out their careers by having the proper mind set and using the same strategies that Gary Mack issued. By staying strong minded and positive, students can feel confident about themselves overcoming any type of delays in their path.
Confidence in a person is a good way to succeed in life. Athletes use this mind set to feel comfortable about themselves and to not get nervous when there in their game. In "You Gotta Believe" in Mind Gym, Gary Mack writes "Belief is a state of mind in which trust or confidence is placed in some person or thing. Beliefs drive behavior, and behavior affects performance in everything we do. When Tiger turned pro said he expects to win every time" (109). Confidence is a way to believe in yourself making you think that you can accomplish anything and overpass any obstacle in your way. Without confidence, you think that failure could happen, meaning that failure is in your mind and you won’t even try your hardest because you already know what you are going to expect. Students can use this technique to feel more comfortable about their studies. In an exam, a student should be able to feel confident about himself because he studied and when a student doesn’t study, he has doubt in himself whenever he doesn’t know the right answers, therefor not having confidence of himself will cause him to not succeed on the exam. The fact of not having confidence in yourself as a student leads to failure.
Believing in yourself is really important in order to have a good mind set in whatever you are doing. In any type of sport, believing in yourself helps an athlete to do better, decreasing the possibility of thinking that they can commit a mistake. According to Gary Mack, In Mind Gym, "In psychology, the term self-efficacy is the belief in one's own ability to be successful. Simply believing in yourself doesn't mean you're always going to win. But believing in yourself can help enable you to put yourself into a position to win" (109). Without it, it may be very easy for you not to try your hardest to succeed and therefor failing. If you believe in yourself, you trust yourself, making you try your best to succeed in your goals and if you don’t succeed, than you can always learn from your mistakes by solving them yourself or with someone’s help. In students, if they don’t believe in themselves then they wont try their hardest to overcome their studies, therefor they will do bad in school.
By being an optimistic person, it can help you have a positive attitude in life by influencing how we act and feel, creating a happier environment, motivating us to accomplish your goals, and encouraging you to try your best. For athletes, having a negative attitude will only put them in a bad mood and wont even motivate them to try their best in any type of activity and it might frustrate them until the point that they get mad. In Mind Gym, Dave Winfield says, "So many players enter the game with the same approximate skills. The difference is not aptitude but attitude" (99). If they all had the same environmental attitude, they would all be playing at the same pace. For students that are pessimists, they will only have a negative attitude that will only get in the way of their studies by creating an angry environment, isolating themselves making it hard for them to make friends that can help them in whatever they’re having trouble in like homework or any classroom activity.
Being committed is a good way to stay motivated so you can try your best in what you want to succeed in. In Mind Gym, the Hall of Fame coach said, "Once a man has made a commitment . . . he puts the greatest strength in the world behind him. It's something we call heart power. Once a man has made a commitment, nothing will stop him short of success" (68). Commitment is a way to promise yourself that you are going to accomplish your goal, or goals. Athletes use this method in order to do better in sports, either committing themselves to do more exercise for better stamina and to stay in shape, or practice their sport more to get more skills. Students can also be committed to themselves so they can try their hardest in school by not giving up on themselves until they reach their goal/goals. For me, when I commit myself to something in school, like building a science project that is hard and I think that I may not pass, I don’t just give up, I stay committed to myself and just keep moving forward until I finish that project. Staying committed always helps me to find a reason not to give up so I just keep on moving forward until I accomplish my goals.
The experience of Gary Mack using "Mind Gym" is very helpful in order to be successful in life if you set your mind into it. It not only benefits you by using his strategies, it can also help others by making them believe in themselves with the proper motivation and mind set. His techniques don’t only work for athletes or students, but for any type of activities such as jobs, a pastime, or even maybe in a relationship.
