"War" By Bob Marley
Nesta Robert Marley, more widely and commonly known as Bob Marley, was born in February 6th 1945 In Jamaica and died May 11th 1981. He lived a life with a world full of racism and war, expressing himself by writing a song called "War". He not just sings about war and racism, but also sings about the poverty amongst the discriminated race and how everybody should be equal. "War" is a good song that is very influential in people because it has a great meaning that opens people’s eyes to the reality of this world of how racism affects us.
In "War", Bob Marley writes, "Until the philosophy which hold one race superior and another inferior is finally and permanently discredited and abandoned." Meaning that he disagrees with racism because as long as there is racism, there will be hate, as long as there is hate, there will be fighting, and as long as there is fighting, there will be war. Racism is a way to hate people when they think they have the right to do it because they think that they are better people when in reality we are all the same with different looks and personalities. No one deserves to be treated less than others just because they think they have better things or because they think they have the right to. Racism is hurtful to many people causing suffering and anger and its not fair to them because they have done nothing wrong if they just come from somewhere different or they just look different.
Bob Marley thinks of equality as a solution to fighting and war. According to Bob Marley in "War", "That until the basic human rights are equally guaranteed to all, without regard to race, dis a war/ And until that day, the African continent will not know peace, we Africans will fight we find it necessary and we know we shall win as we are confident in the victory." He clarifies that without equality, people would have problems causing them to fight for what they want until they obtain it even if it means causing war. Equality for me is having the same benefits, same respect, and the same rights without discriminating other by their color, looks, or even were they come from. No man for any reason deserves less or more than any other, we are all just people.
According to Bob Marley in "War", "Until the ignoble and unhappy regimes that hold our brothers in Angola, in Mozambique South Africa sub-human bondage have been toppled, utterly destroyed, well, everywhere is war, me say war/ War in the east, war in the west war up north, war down south war, war, rumors of war." Pointing out that not only in ignoble and unhappy places is war, but everywhere is war. There has always been war in the world causing so many problems affecting us with so much death and suffering. If everyone helped each other, life would be so much easy and there wouldn't be any reason for wars. Wars never solved anything and even if it did, it would still cause suffering and death. Bob Marley did not just mean war in between countries fighting for land or resources, he also meant that there is also war in between the human race like in gangs, riots, etc.
This song is basically to tell the listeners that we are doing wrong by discriminating others instead of helping each other. By listening and understanding "War", it can open our eyes to see how racism can badly affect our world and it tells us in what ways it affects us, and to what point it affects us. We all live in the same world and whatever comes around goes around so why do wrong instead of helping each other?
